CAF Champions League group stage to expand to 16 teams in 2017

has announced the move to expand the group stage of both the Champions League and Confederation Cup from 2017.

At the 38th CAF Ordinary General Assembly, the administrative body of African football announced reforms to club football. The group stage of the and Confederation Cup will be expanded from 2017.

This was revealed by, CAF President, . It was part of his speech at the Assembly held in Mexico City on 11th May, 2016. 

Both CAF club competitions will have the group phase expanded to 16 teams. Currently, both competitions feature eight teams in two groups.

The reforms will have the 16 teams drawn into four groups. Thus, the teams that lose in the Champions League round of 32 will drop to the Confederation Cup.

The group phase was introduced to the CAF Champions League in 1997. The has had it since its founding in 2004.
